# Create a project

> Set the client, the billing type and the budget, so time and invoices land in the right place.

A project belongs to one client and bundles its tasks, time entries, files, comments and invoices.

## Create

1. Open **Projects** and click **New project**.
2. Choose the client, enter the name and pick the **Billing type**.
3. Set the **Budget** or the **Budget hours**, and the rate if the project has its own.
4. Save.

Most projects start from a won deal instead, which fills in the client and the budget, see [Convert a won deal](/help/deals-and-contacts/convert-a-deal/).

## Billing types

| Billing type | How you bill it |
| --- | --- |
| **Time & materials** | Logged time at the project's rate, through Bill project |
| **Fixed price** | A fixed sum, as progress invoices and a final invoice |
| **Retainer** | A monthly fee with an hours quota, billed per period |
| **Milestones** | Each milestone with its amount |
| **Non-billable** | Internal work, never invoiced |

The billing type decides what the Bill project wizard offers later. See [Bill a project](/help/billing/bill-a-project/) and [Retainers](/help/billing/retainers/).

## Budget and health

With a budget set, the project shows its budget burn: logged time valued at the rate against the budget. The project list and the project page carry a **Health**: **On track**, **At risk** or **Late**, derived from the burn and the plan. Projects at risk appear in Reports and in My Work.

## The project page

| Tab | What it holds |
| --- | --- |
| **Overview** | Budget, health, milestones, recent activity and the briefing |
| **Tasks** | The task list and board |
| **Timeline** | Tasks and milestones over time |
| **Billing** | Unbilled time, invoices and the Bill project wizard |
| **Retainer** | The period ledger, for retainer projects |
| **Files** | Uploaded files and folders |
| **Comments** | Discussion with @-mentions |

The **briefing** at the top of the page is a short, automatically written summary of where the project stands. It is regenerated after changes, and notes you pin to it survive every regeneration.
