# Milestones and sub-projects

> Keep large jobs readable: milestones with amounts, and one level of sub-projects.

Large projects are easier to read in parts. A **milestone** is a phase with its own tasks and, if you want, its own amount. A **sub-project** is a project of its own that rolls up into the parent.

## Milestones

1. On the project's **Overview**, click **New milestone**.
2. Enter the name, the due date and, for milestone billing, the amount.
3. Assign tasks to the milestone on the task, or group the task list **by milestone**.

A milestone shows how many of its tasks are done. When the last open task is completed, the app suggests marking the milestone complete. Milestones that are billed are locked.

For an engineering firm, a change request is a good milestone of its own: the hours booked to it stay visible instead of disappearing into the lump sum.

## Sub-projects

Under **Sub-projects** on the project page, click **New sub-project**. A sub-project has its own tasks, time and budget. The parent shows the roll-up: **Logged**, **Budget**, **Billed (net)** and **Left to bill** across all sub-projects. One level only: a sub-project cannot have sub-projects.
